Sports are expensive. According to the Aspen Institute's 2022 Project Play, the average family paid $883 for one child's primary sport annually, and according to a 2023 Project Play report, around 50% of people who've played or have children who've played youth sports say they've struggled to pay for it. Youth participation in sports not only improves physical and mental health, it also helps improve educational qualities such as critical thinking, determination, and creativity.

Why I Started Geared Up Aspen
Cody Lewis
Sports have been an integral part of my life, from playing soccer at the age of five to qualifying for nationals on the Aspen High School Varsity Alpine Ski Race team. Through these experiences, I learned paramount values such as leadership, teamwork, and perseverance in facing failure. I believe these values acquired from sports are powerful catalysts for setting youth and the community up for success in the future. Accordingly, I began working to help disadvantaged youth in my community access more athletic opportunities by reducing their cost of participation. Observing the positive impact that Geared Up Aspen has made on the lives of individuals and the community as a whole has been extraordinarily gratifying.
